Peter Tepe (born October 20, 1948 ) is a German philosopher , literary scholar and visual artist .

Life

Peter Tepe initially studied painting from 1968 to 1970 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Karl Otto Götz and then moved to the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf . After receiving his doctorate in 1974 and habilitation in 1986 in philosophy, he was appointed adjunct professor in 1994. His professional activity took place from the late 1970s to 2013 in the subject of Modern German Philology , whereby he also offered alternative teaching and learning models - e.g. B. Lecture as a forum for debate, in theater or dialogue form - tried and tested.

Research priorities

In 1987 Tepe established the interdisciplinary study and research focus myth / ideology at Düsseldorf University , which he expanded in the 1990s to include literary theory / methods of text work. Since 2007 he has been publishing the associated online journal Mythos-Magazin , in the areas of myth research , ideology research and explanatory hermeneutics, both scientific articles and excellent student work, which mainly emerged from the focus.

Myth Research

From the 1980s onwards, research on myths of a philosophical, literary and historical scholarly nature dominated Tepe's research and teaching. A distinction must be made between the investigation of the literary processing of mythical materials and motifs, especially from Greco-Roman antiquity, and research into mythical thought representing a certain type of religious worldview. Since 1993, Tepe has been editing the yearbook Mythologica as a forum for interdisciplinary research into myths , which in 2004 became the periodical Mythos .

Literary theories and methods of text work

From the end of the 1990s until 2009, Tepe dealt primarily with problems in philology, especially text studies, and developed cognitive hermeneutics , a theory of interpretation based on principles of empirical-rational thought. A special method of text work (basic interpretation) and a model for the critical analysis of secondary literature are derived from this, which were applied in exemplary studies to ETA Hoffmann's Der Sandmann and Adelbert von Chamisso's Peter Schlemihl's miraculous story . Tepe's approach is controversial; Among other things, there was an argument with Wolfgang Detel .

In 2009 Tepe founded the group Explanatory Hermeneutics / Explanatory Hermeneutics with the philosopher Axel Bühler (Düsseldorf) and the literary scholar Willie van Peer (Munich) .

Research on ideology and fundamentalism

Against the background of cognitive hermeneutics, Tepe has been focusing on ideology research since 2009 to further develop his theory of illusions (1988). It defines three different main forms: the value-neutral analysis, first, of world views and, second, of socio-political programs and, third, the epistemological examination of needs-based thinking, which occurs in all areas of life, but is recognizable and at least partially surmountable. In his subsequent fundamentalism studies, Tepe presents a new kind of critical strategy. According to this, ideological dogmatism is generally based on a mistake in reasoning; this also applies in particular to dogmatism that is prone to violence. There is a plea for the transition to an undogmatic attitude in all areas of life.

Between science and art

Since November 2016, Tepe has also published the internationally oriented, bilingual online journal w / k - Zwischen Wissenschaft & Kunst , which deals with all connections between science and the visual arts. In this context he is also involved in the planning and implementation of exhibitions on this topic, e.g. B. ART INSPIRATION SCIENCE Thomas Schönauer - The Engineering Artist at the University of Düsseldorf (October 19, 2018 to January 31, 2019). Aesthetics, art theory and reflection on the relationship between art and science currently occupy a central position in Tepe's scientific activities. This is also related to the resumption of artistic activity since 2013.
