The Furuta ( Japanese 古 田氏 Furuta-shi ) were a family of the Japanese sword nobility ( Buke ) . The Furuta were part of the Tozama daimyo in the Edo period .

genealogy

  • Shigenari (重 然 ; 1544-1615) had the honorary title of Oribe no kami ("Head of the Weavers' Office"). For his services, Toyotomi Hideyoshi gave himthe Nishigaoka fief in Yamashiro Province with an income of 35,000 koku . After the defeat of the Toyotomi supporters at the siege of Osaka in 1615, he and his eldest son Shigehiro (重 広 ; † 1615) wereforcedto do seppuku . He was the founder of Oribe ceramics and the Oribe-ryū tea ceremony school.
  • Shigekatsu ( 重 勝 ; 1560-1606) was Second Deputy Military Minister ( Hyōbu-shō ). He served Toyotomi Hideyoshi , who gave him the Matsusaka ( Ise Province ) with 37,000 koku. After the Battle of Sekigahara , his income was increased to 55,000 koku.
  • Shigeharu ( 重 治 ; 1578-1625) had the honorary title of Daizen-daibu ("Director of the Great Table"). After the death of his brother Shigekatsu, he inherited Matsusaka. In 1619 he was transferred to Hamada in Iwami Province .
  • Shigetsune ( 重 恒 ; 1603–1648), Shigekatsu's son, was Hyōbu-shō and inherited Hamada. Because of his tyrannical behavior towards his samurai and because he had no offspring, the line with him was extinguished.
