FuXML is an editorial system for the creation and administration of multimedia course materials.

FuXML is an editing system developed for the Fernuniversität Hagen , which supports the creation, administration and maintenance of courses. The primary goal of the project is to relieve the lecturers of technical work that typically occurs when creating hypermedia course materials. The editing system is implemented on the basis of XML and a standardized document format. Teaching materials that correspond to this standardized XML format can be converted into various output formats using cross media publishing without the lecturer having to do any further work. For example, from an XML template of a course, a print version and a multimedia screen version of the course for the student, a print version with sample solutions for the lecturer, and a sample solution output with correction instructions for correctors can be created. The implementation of central design guidelines, for example department-specific design specifications or university-wide specifications for the implementation of barrier-free teaching materials, are only made possible by the editorial system with reasonable effort and costs.

Tasks in the project include the conception and implementation of a Document Type Definition (DTD) for the distance university, selection and adaptation of suitable authoring tools, the implementation of design filters for different output formats, the development of a production server that implements the documents, and the development of a Management component that takes on user guidance and data administration.

FuXML has been available as an open source version since October 2006. Since summer 2010, FuXML is no longer available at the Fernuniversität Hagen .
