The Gärtnerplatz is a square in Munich . It was built around 1860 as the central square of the newly built Isarvorstadt in honor of Friedrich von Gärtner and designed by Max Kolb . It forms the center of the Gärtnerplatzviertel .

description

From 1975 it was brought back to its original state. In particular, in the course of the following two decades, all the building fronts to the square, except for the theater, were painted in the original old pink color.

Due to the problems that the use of the area as a lawn and picnic area brought with it (noise, rubbish, etc.), the area was redesigned in spring 2006. A heated discussion developed about this conversion, whereby the interests of the citizens who had been living there for a long time clashed with the interests of the young new residents of the district. The main point of contention was and is the frequent violation of the night's sleep, especially in the summer months, as well as the legacies left by humans and animals.

A traffic-related peculiarity is that the roundabout surrounding the square at the junction with the southern Corneliusstraße is interrupted by a set of traffic lights to allow the priority of public buses.

The State Theater on Gärtnerplatz , built in 1865, is located at Gärtnerplatz .
