The Gärtnerplatzviertel is a district around the Gärtnerplatz in the Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt district of Munich . It is synonymous with the district 2.1 Gärtnerplatz and extends in the east to the Isar in the district of Deutsches Museum .

location

The district is bordered in the northwest by Blumenstrasse, in the north by Frauenstrasse and Isartorplatz as the border to Lehel and the Altstadtring , in the east by the Isar and in the south and southwest by Fraunhoferstrasse as the border to the neighboring Glockenbachviertel . The terms Gärtnerplatzviertel and Glockenbachviertel are often used synonymously for the entire area of both quarters, as both belong to the Isarvorstadt and now have a similar structure. Although the Müllerstraße - Rumfordstraße forms the border to the city district 1 Altstadt-Lehel , in the public understanding this street still belongs to the Gärtnerplatzviertel.

Until 1992 the area formed the city district 12 "Isarvorstadt-Deutsches Museum".

With the Fraunhoferstraße stop on the U1 and U2 lines, the district is connected to the Munich subway network.

profile

The neighborhood near the Isar was shaped like the Glockenbachviertel by the gay scene. In 2012 the gay communication and cultural center SUB moved within Müllerstrasse and is now in the Gärtnerplatzviertel. The traditional Hotel Deutsche Eiche with the associated gay sauna can also be found here.

Around the corner in Buttermelcherstrasse is the Sacred Heart Monastery of the Sisters of the Divine Redeemer with a girls' dormitory and a Catholic kindergarten. The primary school and a municipal day-care center as well as the support center for mentally handicapped children, the Mathilde-Eller-School with a day care center for curative education, border the monastery . On one side there is the Rischart bakery, on the other side the Kawwana temple by Thorwald Dethlefsen stood from 1996 to 2009 .

Only a few houses further on Reichenbachstrasse was the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde with the main synagogue and the adjoining Jewish retirement home until 2006 . The Munich Osho Center was located on Klenzestrasse .

The district, which was rather shabby until the end of the 20th century, in which mainly workers, many foreigners and some artists lived, such as B. Rabe Perplexum in a back building on Fraunhoferstrasse has changed a lot. A first upgrade took place through the annual Gärtnerplatzfest , which is organized jointly by shopkeepers and the Gärtnerplatztheater . Small everyday shops (ironmongery, bakers, traditional costumes, pedicure), home-style pubs and pubs have been replaced by hairdressers, fashion stores and chic bars in the last decade. Gärtnerplatz was first perceived as a relaxation zone and meeting point through a coffee shop . This is where the indie and alternative scene now meet, which demands a lot of noise tolerance from the residents.

In the 1980s, the legendary dance hall megalomania was on Klenzestrasse . The Fraunhofer tavern with its cabaret and workshop cinema has been located in Fraunhoferstrasse for decades . The first town house in Munich, the Glockenbachwerkstatt, or “the bell” for short, is located on Blumenstrasse.

The action theater , from which the Antiteater emerged in 1968, was located on Müllerstrasse . Both are closely connected to Rainer Werner Fassbinder , who lived on Reichenbachstrasse.

In the course of progressive gentrification , the former Mitte thermal power station, which produced district heating from 1955 to 2001, and the surrounding area were built with high-priced condominiums that were marketed under the name The Seven .

The European Patent Office and the German Patent Office are located on the Isar .
