Gérard de la Guette

Gérard de la Guette († 1322 near Paris ), a nobleman from the Saintonge , was the chief tax officer of King Louis X. (ruled 1314-1316).

After King Charles IV came to power (1322), he was accused of wasting state finances. He was expropriated and locked in a narrow dungeon in the Louvre tower , where he was also interrogated; he later died under the " embarrassing questioning ". The people then dragged his body through the streets of Paris and hung him on the Gibet de Montfaucon . After his death, his innocence is revealed.
