Grass Island ( English for grass island ) is an uninhabited island in Stromness Bay , a bay on the north coast of the South Atlantic island of South Georgia . It is 2.5 km from the former Stromness whaling station . The crescent-shaped island is almost 700 m long in north-south orientation and on average barely 400 m wide.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the island was still known as Mutton Island (English for mutton island ); but Grass Island has been the official name since around 1920 .
