Annenkov Island is an uninhabited island about 13 km off the south coast of South Georgia . It belongs to the British overseas territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic . The highest point of the 6.6 km long and approximately 15 km² large island is Olstad Peak at 650 meters above sea level.

discovery

The island was discovered on January 20, 1775 on James Cook's second voyage to the South Seas and was originally named Pickersgill Island , after Richard Pickersgill , a lieutenant on the Resolution . The island got its current name from Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen , who rediscovered it in 1819 and named it after Michail Annenkow , one of his officers.

natural reserve

The island is a breeding ground for over 500 wandering albatrosses and has been a protected nature reserve as the Site of Special Scientific Interest since 1975 . It can therefore only be entered with a special permit.
