Göktürk 1 is a military earth observation satellite of the Turkish Ministry of Defense (Millî Savunma Bakanlığı) .

It was on December 5, 2016 13:51:44 UTC with a Vega - launcher from the Guiana Space Center moved into a sun-synchronous orbit. The 300 million euro satellite was ordered in 2009, but there were delays due to demands from Turkey to involve domestic companies more closely in the production of the satellite and to operate their own test facilities in Germany. Therefore, Göktürk 2 , which was largely developed in-house together with South Korea, was started in 2012 , but it does not achieve such a high resolution.

The three-axis stabilized satellite is equipped with a camera with 80 cm resolution and is intended to deliver high-resolution images for civil and military purposes. The satellite, which weighs around a ton, was built on the basis of the PROTEUS satellite bus by Telespazio , a joint venture between the Italian defense and space company Leonardo and its French partner Thales . The satellite has a planned lifespan of seven years.
