Gülsün Sağlamer

Gülsün Sağlamer (* 1945 in Trabzon ) is a Turkish architect and professor emeritus at the İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi . She was the first female rector of a technical university in Turkey and the only female rector of a technical university in Europe.

Life

Gülsün Sağlamer completed a degree in architecture at İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi in 1967 and received his doctorate there in 1973. In 1975/76 she worked as a research assistant at the Martin Center in the architecture department of the University of Cambridge .

In 1977 Sağlamer became Doçent and in 1987 a full professor of architectural design at ITU. One of her main research areas was architectural design with the help of CAD methods. From 1996 to 2004 she was the rector of İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi and the first woman in this position at a university in Turkey. Sağlamer has been President of the European Women Rectors Association since 2008, of which she was a founding member.

Sağlamer was a member of the Science Commission of the Turkish Institute for Scientific and Technological Research (TÜBITAK) between 1990 and 1996 and visiting professor at Queen's University of Belfast from 1993 to 1996 .

In 2012 she retired.

Awards

Sağlamer received honorary doctorates from Carleton University (2001), Universitatea de Nord in Baia Mare (2002) and Universitatea Ovidius Constanța (2009). She has been an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) since 2006 and in 2005 received the “Leonardo da Vinci Medal” from the European Society for Engineering Education . She has been a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts since .
