Günter Knops (born July 15, 1942 ; † June 15, 2011 in Alsdorf ) was a German football goalkeeper .

Career

Günter Knops had already played for Alemannia Aachen as a youth and joined their amateur squad in 1960. Temporarily he was also number 2 behind Gerd Prokop in the first team and made 14 league appearances in 1962/63 and nine regional league appearances in 1963/64. After Alemannia's promotion to the Bundesliga, he moved back into the third tier. However, due to injuries to the set keepers Prokop and Heinz Schors , Knops came to a Bundesliga assignment on matchday 28 of the 1967/68 season. The game against VfB Stuttgart was lost 4-1, but Knops is said to have been the best man of his team and prevented a higher defeat. However, this game was his last in the professional field. In 1968 he moved to SC Jülich , where he played until 1971. He was later still active for Borussia Brand and Stolberger SV .

Trivia

Knops was later the managing partner of a mechanical engineering company. He died on June 15, 2011 in Alsdorf.
