Günther Alster

Günther Alster (born October 10, 1955 in Dornbirn ) is a former Austrian ski racer . His greatest success was winning the downhill classification in the European Cup in 1977.

Career

Alster belonged to the Bregenzerwald ski club. After several successes in junior races, the downhill specialist joined the C-squad of the Austrian Ski Association in the early 1970s and was accepted into the European Cup team in 1973. His first podium was third on the La Foux d'Allos Downhill in 1974.

In the 1976/77 European Cup season , Alster celebrated his first and only victory in the downhill from Haus im Ennstal and finished second in the downhill from San Sicario . He won the downhill classification with a clear lead over his team-mate Bartl Gensbichler and finished fifth in the overall standings. In the 1977/78 season he reached second place in the downhill from Verbier , but then suffered a serious injury, which is why he had to announce his retirement in the summer of 1978 at the age of only 22.

Alster's son Christoph , born in 1980 , also became a ski racer.
