Günther Haasch (born April 18, 1926 in Berlin ; died April 7, 2020 in Ostfildern ) was a German Japan expert, author and long-time president of the German-Japanese Society Berlin.

Live and act

Günther Haasch was drafted in 1944 and seriously wounded in the Halbe Kessel Battle . In 1946 he made up his Abitur and studied Classical Philology, Older and Modern German Studies, Philosophy and Art History. 1955 followed by a doctorate at the Free University of Berlin on a literary topic. Haasch then taught at universities and schools in Paris (1958 to 1959), Tokyo (1963 to 1968) and in Bangkok (1969 to 1974). In 1978 he returned to Berlin and until 1986 took over the management of the seminar for the training of trainee students, without neglecting his role as an intermediary between Germany and Japan. From the Senate School Administration, he made a significant contribution to the introduction of Japanese as a foreign language at Berlin high schools.

Haasch has taught at the East Asian Seminar of the Free University of Berlin since 1979, and since 1981 he has been a volunteer at the German-Japanese Society Berlin, from 1986 to 2004 as President. From 2000 to 2002 he was also President of the Germany-wide "Association of German-Japanese Societies". In this function he was in charge of the special exchange program for students "Hallo Hannover 2000 - Hallo Seto 2005".

Haasch campaigned for German-Asian international understanding and for many years was an honorary lecturer at the Japanological Seminar of the Free University of Berlin. In 2006 he donated the funds for a fund to support young people in need as part of the German-Japanese youth exchange.

Haasch wrote a number of writings on Japan-related topics and worked as an editor in this field.
