Günther Irmscher senior

Günther Irmscher senior (* 1937 ; † February 9, 1996 ) was a German entrepreneur and racing car driver . In 1968 he founded the Irmscher Automobilbau company , which has been managed by his son Günther Irmscher junior since 1996 .

Racing career

Günther Irmscher senior started in 1965 with an NSU Prinz TT , which he prepared himself for use in a double garage in rally and circuit races .

From 1966 to 1970 he regularly competed in the Tour d'Europe rally, initially with an NSU Prinz TT, and later from 1968 with an Opel Kadett and Opel Commodore . Together with his co-driver Harald Andersen, he achieved his best result at the Tour d'Europe Rally and at the same time his greatest success in motorsport with overall victory. In his last Tour d'Europe rally, he finished second overall.

Career as an entrepreneur

In 1968 Irmscher founded the company Irmscher Automobilbau, which primarily offered vehicle and engine tuning for Opel brand cars. From 1970 he built individualized vehicles in cooperation with Opel, which were sold as Irmscher Opel .

At the same time, Irmscher equipped some rally drivers, such as Walter Röhrl , Achim Warmbold and Sepp Haider, with his racing cars and was thus able to record profits as a team in national and international events such as the European Rally Championship .

From 1989 to 1991 the Irmscher racing team competed in the German Touring Car Championship . The Opel Kadett GSi 16V and Opel Omega 3000 24V racing cars were used there. Markus Oestreich achieved the best result for the team in 1989 with 19th place in the overall ranking.
