Cargo transport with towing vehicle and trailer

GüterBim is the name of a project by Wiener Linien with partners TINA Vienna, VIENNA CONSULT and Wiener Lokalbahnen AG , in which inner-city freight traffic was brought back onto the tram tracks after more than 50 years . The official title of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) within the framework of the I2 (Intelligent Infrastructure) program is: "Goods transport in the city area on the existing public transport infrastructure".

In the course of the project, which began in August 2004, the infrastructure, the vehicle fleet and the organizational, legal and logistical conditions for a trial run in factory traffic were examined. This was necessary because the Viennese tram runs largely in the street space and therefore rail-bound freight traffic must not only be linked to passenger transport, but also to the concerns of car traffic. Specifically, this means that about the entire track network was examined for the possibility of transport with rail-bound freight vehicles (e.g. container transport ) and the possibility of linking with the mainline railway.

The entire special vehicle fleet was also examined for possible use and the applicable law with regard to rail-bound transport (loading in the street) was analyzed.

The demonstration operation was carried out in Vienna in May 2005 . The media interest was very high (even before that).

As an experiment, Wiener Linien depots were temporarily supplied with goods for daily use (driver's seats, tires, batteries, etc.) by tram. A traction unit consisting of an LH (towing vehicle) and a type sl1 trailer (formerly rail transporter) was used. As part of the project in the main workshop of Wiener Linien, the trailer was specially adapted for freight transport and supplied with a tarpaulin. It was also planned to convert the bogie transport to goods trams. Business concepts were negotiated with several trading companies, a forwarding agent and a large municipal supplier and disposal company.

In August 2005, Wiener Linien began its first journeys, but these were only internal transports. The coexistence of passenger and freight traffic was successfully tested. On January 1, 2006, the GüterBim-Telematik project started, which was primarily concerned with the operational networking of logistics, ordering and operations control systems.

On June 30, 2007, the project was completed as planned. The findings of the GüterBim and GüterBim-Telematik projects were given in report form to the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology and the Research Promotion Agency.
