Main workshop of Wiener Linien
The main workshop of Wiener Linien is located near the central cemetery in Vienna's 11th district , Simmering . It is operated by Wiener Linien GmbH & Co KG (WL for short, until June 11, 1999 Wiener Stadtwerke - Verkehrsbetriebe ), a company owned by the City of Vienna .
tasks
This is where general inspections, major repairs and reconditioning of replacement parts are carried out on all subway cars , trams and buses of Wiener Linien as well as on the vehicles of Wiener Lokalbahnen (also a company of the City of Vienna). In addition, the main workshop also builds new vehicles and reconstructs museum vehicles. In the early years, the main workshop was also responsible for the vehicles of the Viennese electric light rail , which operated until 1989.
The structural change in public transport and the development of new generations of vehicles have made it necessary to build this facility, which is one of the largest industrial buildings in Vienna. All necessary service and repair work could now be carried out under one roof .
The core of the main workshop is the 6.4-hectare factory hall, where the more than 2,500 Wiener Linien vehicles are checked and serviced at regular intervals to ensure the safety of passengers. The vehicles are therefore sent to the main workshop for general inspections, also known as “recurring inspections”. In addition, regular checks and maintenance work are also carried out in the individual coach houses and garages.
For rail vehicles, interim inspections are required by law every two years, combined with detailed test drives, brake tests and other functional tests as well as electrical measurements. Busses undergo an interim check-up at three-month intervals.
History and present
The then Central workshop ( ZW ) called main workshop was following a decision from 1965 in charge of the municipal enterprises business group of the magistrate under the political responsibility of Maria Schaumayer planned by 1969 under Tramwaystadtrat Franz Nekula built and by Mayor Leopold Gratz on May 29 Opened in 1974. It is located at the address 11., Simmeringer Hauptstrasse 252; the area is 26.4 hectares.
The closest public transport stops are now the Hauptwerkstätte stop of the bus route 71A of Wiener Linien and some regional bus routes from Kaiserebersdorf to Schwechat in Lower Austria, the Zentralfriedhof stop , 4th gate of tram line 6 and the Vienna Kaiserebersdorf S-Bahn station on the Donauländebahn , where S-Bahn and regional trains to Vienna Airport and Wolfsthal ( Pressburger Bahn , S7) stop. To the south-west of this station there is a siding of Wiener Linien from the south side of the main workshop to the ÖBB mainline rail network .
From 2009 to 2014, the main workshop was completely modernized while operations continued.
