The G4 countries

The G4 states or Group of Four are the states of Germany , Brazil , India and Japan with regard to a reform of the United Nations .

The G4 countries are striving for a comprehensive expansion of the United Nations Security Council from 15 to 25 members, including 6 new permanent seats. The plan for the Group of Four provides for two permanent seats for Africa and four additional non-permanent seats - one each for Asia , Africa , Latin America and Eastern Europe .

However, the joint application by Germany, Japan, Brazil and India (G4) for permanent seats on the UN Security Council was again rejected by an overwhelming majority in August 2005 by the African Union (AU) and therefore no longer has a chance of obtaining what was required for adoption Two-thirds majority of 128 of the 193 member states of the UN General Assembly . As a result, Japan was the first of the G-4 countries to indicate the withdrawal of the joint application.

If the AU rejects it, it is very likely that the G4 application will be withdrawn. Japan's Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura responded by stating that his government would “not insist on a vote in the General Assembly under any circumstances”.
