GDC1 ( G rafik- D isplay- C omputer 1 ) was the name of a computer kit from the GDR. The TH Ilmenau developed and sold it. It was also known as the FDJ computer .

hardware

The computer was in fact a follow-up development of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum home computer . However, the GDC1 had 64 KB of RAM, two PIOs and a CTC . The RAM was expandable up to 256 KB, on the other hand the ROM was only 4 KB in size (ZX Spectrum: 16 KB).

Differences to the ZX Spectrum

The following differences lead u. a. on incompatibility with the original:

  • since the CPU is not working while the image is being created, the timing is different
  • I / O is PIO instead of register controlled

software

Only a bootloader was included. The actual operating system had to be loaded from the cassette after switching on.

Due to changed ROM routines and technical deviations / inadequacies, it was only partially compatible with its model Sinclair ZX Spectrum.

Others

Despite the name GDC1, the computer had nothing in common with the graphics controller GDC (coll. For the U82720 ).

The HCX was a similar computer that could also be purchased as a kit.
