GEW Köln is owned by the City of Cologne . For tax reasons, the city only holds 10% of the shares directly, the other 90% are owned by Stadtwerke Köln , which also belongs to the city.
History of the "GEW old"
The Gas-, Elektrizitäts- und Wasserwerke Köln AG (GEW) was founded in 1872 as "Gas- und Wasserwerk". As one of the largest German municipal energy and water supply companies, the GEW was 100% owned by the city of Cologne. In 2002 RheinEnergie AG was founded as a new company for the entire Rhenish region. GEW transferred facilities, personnel and operational business to RheinEnergie and transformed into a pure holding company for RheinEnergie.
