G III of the 3rd series, Athens – Kifisia

The GIII is a railcar series of the Athens Metro .

The railcars belonged to the G series , which was originally used on the Berlin U-Bahn . The vehicles were initially developed by MAN in Nuremberg on the basis of the G-II railcars and partly equipped with MAN technology.

There were three series of G III trains, which differ both visually and technically. In the first series, the interior fittings and traction motors of the GI series were used, in the second and third series new technology was used that had been developed for the G III trains by MAN.

They were then built from 1983 at LEW Hennigsdorf in the GDR in cooperation with MAN and Siemens .

In the 1980s they were sold to Athens . Due to the prevailing climate there, however, they were unpopular due to the lack of air conditioning and from 1999 onwards they were only used during peak times on the Athens - Kifisia and Piraeus metro . The vehicles of the first production series were finally completely scrapped in 2004. The vehicles of the second and third series are meanwhile no longer counted among the G III trains due to the technical and wagon construction differences.
