The GM XP-883 was the prototype of a plug-in hybrid vehicle from General Motors (GM) and one of the first modern hybrid vehicles . The XP-883 project was presented in 1969 as a study for a commuter car (“ commuter car”) with seats for two adults and two children.

prehistory

The direct forerunner of the XP-883 was a test vehicle called Stir-Lec 1 , which had an electric motor as well as a Stirling motor as a range extender , which recharged the batteries while driving. The gas tank for the engine was above the rear axle, while the 14 conventional lead-acid batteries were in the front. The Stir-Lec 1, based on an Opel Kadett B Coupé , reached a top speed of 90 km / h. GM featured the vehicle in an advertisement in Car Craft magazine in 1969 .

Technical specifications

The GM XP-883 has a serial hybrid drive in which there is no mechanical connection between the combustion engine and the front-wheel drive axle. The coaxial, longitudinally installed direct current electric motor drives the drive shaft via a planetary gear , a two-cylinder gasoline engine with OHV valve control is used to extend the range. The horizontally installed, water-cooled internal combustion engine has a displacement of 570 or 573 cm 3 (35  cui ) depending on the specifications . The six lead batteries are located above the rear axle. The vehicle can be operated in hybrid or purely electric mode, with the driver switching between the two electronically or manually. In both operating modes, only the electric motor is used at speeds below 10 mph (16 km / h).

Like the Stir-Lec, the car is based on the Opel Kadett B, with the body made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic . The front of the XP-883 is reminiscent of the Chevrolet Vega , which arose from the related prototype XP-884, the hatchback body of the later Opel Kadett City . The XP-883 is a four-seater, but the seats are arranged back to back ( dos-à-dos ) so that the passengers in the rear face against the direction of travel.
