GNU variants
GNU variants are operating systems based on GNU .
GNU / Linux
GNU / Linux , a variant of GNU that uses the Linux kernel , is by far the most popular variant of GNU and is often referred to as Linux instead of GNU / Linux (see GNU / Linux name dispute ). This term is also used for operating systems that only contain basic programs such as the shell and compiler of the GNU project and not Gnome and GNU GTK + applications. Numerous projects and companies provide so-called Linux distributions .

Dyson is a free operating system that connects the Debian GNU / Linux user land with the Illumos kernel. One goal of the project is to be accepted as the official Debian port. The developers make Live CDs available at irregular intervals, which also contain an installation program. It is intended to add the missing functions from Illumos, including Zones.
Discontinued derivatives
Debian GNU / NetBSD
Debian GNU / NetBSD is a variant of GNU that used the NetBSD kernel . It was discontinued in 2002.
Nexenta OS
Nexenta OS is a free variant based on Solaris . The operating system contains the Solaris kernel, which was made open source in the course of OpenSolaris, and the Solaris system software, while the software installation is managed using the Debian package format . Nexenta OS uses Debian GNU / Linux and Ubuntu as the basis for the system . The originally planned name for Nexenta OS was GNU / Solaris. In August 2010 it was announced that version 4.0 would no longer be based on Solaris, but on Illumos, which was co-founded by Nexenta, but in the following year Nexenta OS was discontinued and replaced by Illumian .
Illumian
The successor to Nexenta OS, which was based on the Illumos kernel and the Debian GNU userland, was discontinued after version 1.0 was released in 2012.
