The GP2X is an open source , Linux -based handheld console and media player . It was developed and produced by the South Korean company Gamepark Holdings . The console was released on November 10, 2005, but only in South Korea. The GP2X has been designed for both self-developers and commercial developers. It is commonly used to run emulators for classic consoles such as Neo Geo , Sega Mega Drive , Sega Master System , Sega Game Gear , Amstrad CPC , Commodore 64 , Nintendo Entertainment System , PC-Engine / TurboGrafx-16 , MAME and others.

history

Model "F200" with touch screen

Shortly after the GP32 was released in 2001, Gamepark began developing their next portable console. Due to differences of opinion among employees regarding the arrangement of the system, the Gamepark company split up. This was followed by the establishment of two new companies, including Gamepark Holdings, which then began to develop a 2D-based portable console which was to be launched as the successor to the GP32. To determine and promote the specifications of the new device, Gamepark Holdings entered into an agreement with previous GP32 developers. The final look of the console was then agreed through a few meetings in Seoul . The console's first name, GPX2, could not be adopted as the final brand name due to a trademark infringement. A registration competition was held to find a name, and around 1500 names were submitted. Matt Bakse won the competition with the name GP2X and received a console for it. The GP2X went through several hardware revisions. The main ones were from the first version to the normal version and later to the MK2 version. On October 30, 2007, the "F200", a version with a touchscreen and other, minor changes, was released. As of October 16, 2006, the GP2X had been sold nearly 30,000 times. On August 31, 2008, there were finally around 60,000 copies that the company Gamepark Holdings sold. At the end of August 2008, the successor to the GP2X, the GP2X Wiz, was announced and was released in May 2009.

Since September 2008 the GP2X has been distributed in Korea by the company Vocamaster, mainly as a kind of language trainer.

Expansion options

The GP2X has an EXT extension connection on the underside of the device, in which you can find a number of different connection options (e.g. for USB host or TV output). A breakout box can also be connected so that four USB devices can be connected and communicate directly with the GP2X. The only limitation imposed by this interface is the availability of drivers . The connection is not proprietary; the specifications of this connection are completely open.

TV output

The console also has a TV output that runs through the EXT port with a special cable. This enables videos that are normally adapted to the GP2X screen to be played on a television at their native resolution. In addition, software can be displayed in a higher resolution on the television than on the GP2X screen. Not all software supports native resolution, but there is software that supports TV support for any other. This is then carried out by a background process.

Storage

The GP2X's primary storage system is a Secure Digital Memory Card (SD card) that plugs into a slot on the top of the device. Older versions only support SD cards with a storage capacity of up to 4 GB. The SD cards must also be FAT16 , FAT32 or Ext2 formatted. The GP2X offers 64 MB of internal flash memory ,  32 MB of which can be used for user data.

Since version 4.0, SDHC cards can also be used, which can store significantly more with a storage capacity of up to 32  GB .

overclocking

The two ARM processors in the GP2X can be overclocked above their nominal frequency with suitable software. The maximum achievable speed varies from system to system. Only 1 in 50 devices manage more than 300  MHz , others barely reach 240 MHz. However, many systems manage 240 MHz, but the highest clock rate is usually 266 MHz.

Multimedia support

  • Video formats: DivX 3/4/5, Xvid (MPEG-4)
  • Audio formats: MP3 and Vorbis
  • Container files: AVI and OGM (WMA and MPG via additional software)

  • Battery life audio only: approx. 6 hours

software

Since the tools for developing software are freely available, there is an abundance of software for the GP2X, most of which is free. Types of software are emulators, games, multimedia players, and PDA applications.

The GP2X has already installed several software ex works. These include the MPlayer, which makes it possible to listen to music and play videos, a picture viewer, an e-book reader and a tool for setting the LCD frequency.
