GR 2013

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The GR 2013 is a 365 km long long-distance hiking trail that leads through the contemporary landscape of Provence in the metropolitan region of the southern French port city of Marseille . It is classified as a GR long-distance hiking trail ( sentier de Grande Randonnée de Pays , GRdP), but the artists involved in its creation modified some of the proven principles.

Route

In the form of a horizontal 8, the GR 2013 runs from the Aix TGV station around two undeveloped areas on the periphery of the port metropolis of Marseille. In the west it circles the inland sea Étang de Berre , in the east the massifs Étoile and Garlaban. The route, designated by its initiator as a metropolitan hiking trail, leads through cities and their peripheral areas. The GR 2013 crosses 38 municipalities, three shopping centers, industrial areas, Roman forts, railway lines, fields, highways, housing developments, industrial wastelands , but also Natura 2000 areas and two mountain ranges. The entire route takes 15–20 days.

Definition of the metropolitan hiking trail

The term "Metropolenwanderweg" (French: sentier métropolitain ) was coined by the inventor of the GR 2013 Baptiste Lanaspeze. Such a path leads through the city, suburbs and their peripheries. The definition of the route should enable the population to hike all parts of the city - including the otherwise avoided peripheral areas - on foot. The aim of a metropolitan hiking trail is to experience urban space differently, to establish relationships between places that were thought to be far apart and to link the areas of ecology and urban planning, contemporary art and literature, tourism, local public transport, local politics and biodiversity .

Basic ideas

The basic idea for the 2013 GR was to renew the relationship between city and nature. Its initiator, the publisher Baptiste Lanaspeze, conceived the path together with eleven so-called "walkers" from the Cercle des Marcheurs and the Excursionnistes marseillais , the local hiking club. Its inventors consider the path to be a work of art in itself and compare it to an “open-air museum” in the form of a hiking trail that allows the contemporary landscape of the Bouches-du-Rhône region to be experienced on foot.

Partner of the joint project

The GR 2013 is a project from the 2013 European Capital of Culture Region, Marseille-Provence. It was realized together with the Cercle des Marcheurs ("Club of the Walkers "), the regional hiking committee (the Conseil Général des Bouches-du-Rhône ) and the French hiking association ( FFRandonnée ) and coordinated by the publisher Éditions Wildproject .

Animation

Marking scheme for long-distance hiking trails in France.

Like every sentier de Grande Randonnée de Pays , the GR 2013 is marked by yellow-red markings and is therefore accessible from anywhere on the route. As part of the Marseille-Provence 2013 Capital of Culture year, exploration tours with the "walkers", hikes, picnics, audio walks and art performances in six cities on the GR 2013 will also take place on six festival weekends. From March 12 to May 12, 2013, an exhibition in the Marseilles Chamber of Crafts in the Palais de la Bourse will show various works by the "walkers" that reflect the development of the route and their perspective on the 2013 GR.
An unusual hiking book combines practical map material, information on architecture, industrial history, waters and plants with works by the artists (photos, maps, drawings, texts).

Projects that arose in the context of the GR 2013

  • Trailpoints , an internet observation post in the 2013 GR region by Bryan Connell.
  • Observatoire Photographique , a photography observatory by Geoffroy Mathieu and Bertrand Stofleth. 100 selected viewpoints on the GR 2013 will be photographed once a year over the course of ten years.
  • Caravan (CAUE13, Radio Grenouille and ÈditionsWildproject), an exploration project by the Department's Architecture, Urban Planning and Environment Council with experts from the municipalities on the route (mayors, members of parliament, architects, tourist guides, former refinery employees, rangers, etc.).
  • Promenades sonores , audio walks around Marseille by Radio Grenouille (local radio station).
