The GVFI International AG , based in Basel is one of the meat - Import specialized Swiss wholesale company . It imports meat primarily from Europe, South America and Australia / New Zealand and, to a lesser extent, from North America and supplies around 150 customers throughout Switzerland. The import volume in 2012 was 29,800 tonnes, of which around a third was beef , around 17 percent each for poultry , lamb and pork and the remaining 14 percent for horse meat , game , veal and meat by-products .
GVFI was founded in 1947 as a « cooperative for cattle and meat imports» and in 2000 it was converted into a stock corporation. In 2012 the company generated sales of 351 million Swiss francs.
