Gabriel Nuchelmans

Gabriel RFM Nuchelmans (born May 15, 1922 in Oud-Gastel / North Brabant ; † August 6, 1996 ) was a Dutch philosopher specializing in the history of philosophy , in particular the philosophy of the Middle Ages , as well as logic and the philosophy of language .

Life

After finishing high school at the Episcopal College of Roermond , Nuchelmans studied at the Catholic University of Nijmegen , where he took the exam in 1947. During his doctorate, he spent a year in Friborg / Switzerland with Olof Gigon and Joseph Maria Bocheński . In 1947/48 he attended events by Alfred Ayer and Stuart Hampshire at University College London . He also heard Karl Popper and OJ Wisdom at the London School of Economics . After obtaining his PhD , Nuchelmans taught Latin and Greek in Velsen for fourteen years . From 1964 he taught at the philosophical institute of the University of Leiden philosophy of antiquity and analytical philosophy and their history until he retired with his farewell lecture on September 10, 1987. Nuchelmans had been a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences since 1975 . His large work in three volumes on the history of proposition will remain the standard work for a long time.
