Gabriel Roucaute

Gabriel Roucaute (born April 25, 1904 in Alès , † February 21, 1960 ibid) was a French politician. From 1945 to 1958 he was a member of the National Assembly .

Roucaute, who came from a working class family, joined the Communist Party in 1924 . In the early 1930s, he spent a year in the Soviet capital, Moscow, and in 1932 became his party's local secretary. He went to the Loire department , where he joined the militant communists and in 1938 rose to the position of regional secretary. During the Second World War and the German occupation, Roucaute lived underground and took part in the organization of the party. He was caught and sentenced to death on August 12, 1942 . After massive protests, the sentence was in an October 3, lifelong hard labor penalty converted. With the liberation of France in 1944, Roucaute was also released. In 1945 he was first elected mayor of Alès, then to the General Council of the Gard department and finally to the National Assembly. Together with the communist Gilberte Roca , he was always re-elected until 1958. In 1958, however, Roucaute failed. His candidacy for the Senate in 1959 was also unsuccessful.
