gaff

Gaff for deep sea fishing, length 115 cm

The gaff is a hook on a long handle that is used to lift large fish out of the water. The gaff is mainly used for deep sea fishing and ice fishing when the fish is too big and heavy for a net .

It is used correctly by pushing the hook under the gill cover of the fish and pulling the fish out of the water without any external injuries.

Striking the hook into the flank of the fish is to be refused, as it is forbidden to cause unnecessary harm to fish for reasons of animal welfare. In Germany, the prohibition of Section 1 (2) of the Animal Welfare Act would apply here. A fish injured in this way would also have to be killed if it was undersized.

When fishing, a landing net is usually preferable to a gaff as a landing tool.
