The word Gaffel / Jaffel denotes the word “ fork ” in Low German / Kölschen - originally as a two-pronged (meat) fork. The following terms were derived from this:

  • Gaff as part of the gaff rigging in shipbuilding
  • Gaffel (Cologne) , in the plural "Gaffeln", political association of guilds and citizens in the Middle Ages in the free imperial city of Cologne
  • Aachen Gaffelbrief , historical constitution of the Free Imperial City of Aachen with the participation of the guilds / gaffs
  • Privatbrauerei Gaffel Becker & Co , a Cologne-based private brewery (the main product is Gaffel Kölsch )
