On February 20, 1832, a brawl broke out in Renan. Locals and refugees who were given refuge in Renan from the failed uprising in Neuchâtel in December 1831 clashed. Gagnebin asked some friends from abroad to protect people and property that were threatened by the Neuchâtel Republicans. This measure went too far for the Jurassic liberals and they viewed it as a provocation. Gagnebin was then charged with abuse of office .

In 1834 Gagnebin was sentenced in the last instance. He was imprisoned for a month, lost his civil rights for a year, was removed from office and lost his notarial license. None of the Neuchâtel residents were punished.
