Gaius Caelius Martialis

Gaius Caelius Martialis (full name form Gaius Caelius Gai filius Oufentina Martialis ) was a member of the Roman knighthood ( Eques ) living in the 2nd century AD . Individual stations in his career are known through an inscription dated 107/114.

Martialis was initially prefect of the Cohors I Raetorum , which was stationed in the province of Raetia . He then became a military tribune in Legio XIII Gemina , which was stationed in the province of Dacia . In the second Dacian War he received military awards ( donis militaribus donatus est ) from Trajan for his achievements ; in addition, during the war he helped with the food supply of the army ( copiarum curam adiuvit ).

After his military career, Martialis was initially procurator in the province of Achaea . Subsequently he was procurator of the iron mines ( procurator ferrariarum ), probably those in Gaul; both posts were linked to an annual income of 100,000 sesterces .

Martialis was registered in the Oufentina tribe . The inscription was made by his friend, Lucius Gellius Menander .
