Gaius Iulius Alpinus Classicianus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gaius Iulius Alpinus Classicianus († 65 ) was procurator in the Roman province of Britain from 61 to 65 AD.

Classicianus was the successor to Catus Decianus , who had to flee to Gaul after the Boudicca uprising . Classicianus, whose name came from Gaul , expressed concern to Nero that the harsh policies of the governor Gaius Suetonius Paulinus could produce further hostilities against the Romans. Nero then sent the freed man Polyclitus , who carried out an investigation into the situation in the province.

Classician died in AD 65. The remains of his tomb were excavated in London in the mid-19th century and can now be seen in the British Museum . Possibly there is a relationship between C. Iulius Alpinus Classicianus and the Helvetic nobleman Iulius Alpinus , who is mentioned by Tacitus in connection with the turmoil in the four-emperor year 69 AD.

Classicianus was married to Iulia Pacata , the daughter of the Treverian prince Iulius Indus .
