Gajah Tunggal is the largest tire manufacturer in Southeast Asia and one of the 20 largest tire manufacturers worldwide. Well-known brand is GT Radial . The company was founded in 1951 and is based in Jakarta , Indonesia . It has been listed on the Jakarta (JSX) and Surabaya (SSX) stock exchanges since 1990 .
The company is mainly engaged in the production and sale of a range of tires and inner tubes for motorcycles, cars, commercial vehicles, industrial machines and four-wheel drive vehicles. The subsidiaries Prima Sentra Megah and Polychem Indonesia are active in the chemical sector.
Five tire manufacturing factories are located 30 km west of Jakarta in Tangerang .
history
Gajah Tunggal was founded in 1951 to manufacture bicycle tires and inner tubes. In 1971 the range was expanded to include motorcycle tires in cooperation with the Inoue Rubber Company . From 1981 the Yokohama Rubber Company also produced tires for cars and commercial vehicles.
In 1990 the company finally went public. The following year it bought GT Petrochem Industries , a manufacturer of tire cord.
After receiving the relevant certifications, a cooperation with Pirelli for the production of tires for the North American and European market was decided in 1997 .
In 2002, however, the company's debt had grown so much that it had to agree to a restructuring. The debt burden had to be reduced by more than US $ 200 million. In 2004, subsidiaries such as GT Petrochem were deconsolidated in order to be able to concentrate on core tasks again. Michelin and Garibaldi took over the majority in the company in May 2004 with 78% of the shares.
