Galandum Galundaina is a Portuguese folk band from the Miranda do Douro district .
Career and conception
The band was founded in 1996 to preserve and cultivate the slowly dying Mirandés language and its songs from the villages around Miranda do Douro. They sing exclusively on Mirandés and only use traditional regional instruments, some of which they have made themselves. The various local bagpipes and drums, hurdy-gurdy hurdy-gurdy , local flutes and the like are decisive for the music . a. Their repertoire includes instrumental pieces and sung songs, often with a deep male choir refrain or stanzas performed with several voices. These archaic songs based on traditional traditions and their contemporary performance brought them the attention of the regional public. The band also received national attention, which is not common for the remote region of Trás-os-Montes . In addition to Scottish and Spanish guest musicians on their second album in 2005, Sérgio Godinho was a guest singer on their third album in 2009.
Since its founding, the band has endeavored to maintain and maintain the local language and culture with a variety of activities. Her concern is also to make the cultural and linguistic peculiarities of her region known in the rest of the country and internationally at her numerous concerts, including Malaysia . For example, they appear with guest musicians or the folklore group of stick dancers ("Pauliteiros") when they are engaged outside their region, for example the Festa do Avante! 2005, but also in Germany. The initiators of the Festival Intercéltico de Sendim , an international festival for music with Celtic roots , which has been held since 2000, come from their environment .
