Festival Intercéltico de Sendim
The Festival Intercéltico de Sendim is a folk festival for Celtic music that has been held in Sendim in the Portuguese region of Trás-os-Montes since 2000 . The festival takes place annually in summer, usually in August, and lasts for a whole weekend.
history
The festival was founded in 2000 by a group from the band Galandum Galundaina , who tried to preserve the local language ( Mirandés ) and culture with its Celtic roots. Sendim is one of the few places where Mirandés is still spoken. The place still has a medieval charm with its characteristic granite stone buildings. Sendim is located in the rugged natural landscape of the Parque Natural do Douro Internacional , the nature reserve of the international zone of the Douro .
In the beginning, groups from Northern Portugal , Galicia , the Basque Country and other Iberian regions appeared, which refer to Celtiberian roots, but also groups from Ireland (e.g. Lúnasa ) and Great Britain (e.g. Shooglenifty or the Oyster ribbon ). Later groups from Scandinavia and Eastern Europe (Hungary, Poland and Ukraine) were also guests. B. Hedningarna 2009.
The festival has steadily grown in popularity among friends of Celtic music and has also been televised. It was included in the list of the most important festivals in Europe by the European Forum of Folk Festivals in 2011. In 2010, 5,000 people attended the festival.

In addition to the concerts, the festival is accompanied by various gastronomic and cultural offers, including excursions for bird watching and donkey rides, street artists, exhibitions, CD, book and handicraft stands, Mirandés language courses and a Celtic fair. A special Celtic liqueur is also served .
