The Galgenberg is a 206.8 m high mountain in the district of Sömmerda in Thuringia , Germany .

Geographical location

The Galgenberg is the highest point on a small ridge in the Thuringian Basin between the villages of Tunzenhausen in the south and Weissensee in the north. The district town of Sömmerda borders directly on its south-eastern edge. The state road L 1054 from Sömmerda to Weißensee leads east over the mountain.

nature

Geologically, the ridge running in an east-west direction belongs to the Thuringian Keuperbecken . Further elevations are in the east of the Wartenberg (approx. 175 m), in the southwest of the Oberberg (192.8 m) and in the west of the Kahle Berg (approx. 180 m). To the south and west, the mountain falls steeply to the Unstrut valley . The FFH area Kahler Berg and Drachenschwanz near Tunzenhausen is also located here, with rare animal and plant species (dry grass and steppe grass). To the north, the mountain flattens with a slight incline towards the Helbetal , where it is used for agriculture as in the ridge area.

On the mountain are the remains of the prehistoric castle complex Weißenburg with ramparts.
