The Galileo cliffs are 1,300 m high and 8 km long cliffs in the east of the West Antarctic Alexander I Island . They rise 11 km from Ablation Point between the Grotto and Jupiter glaciers .
Trimetrogon recordings by the American Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947-1948) and measurements by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey between 1948 and 1950 were used to map it. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named them in 1974 based on the name of the Jupiter Glacier after the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei (1564-1642), the discoverer of four moons of the planet Jupiter ( Io , Europa , Ganymede and Callisto ).
