The Galileo Wissenswelt is a certified museum on the Baltic Sea island of Fehmarn (Ostholstein). Since 2018 there has been a museum expansion on the Baltic Sea island of Rügen with another museum building.

structure

The museum sees itself as a solidarity between a classic collecting museum and a museum for children and young people and places particular emphasis on the concept of “understanding through understanding”. On a total of 3,200 m² in the main building in Burg auf Fehmarn , the two subject areas “natural history” and “technology” are conveyed. The “Übersee - Art, Culture and Völkerforum” branch at the port in Burgstaaken on Fehmarn, which is also part of the Galileo World of Knowledge, is 500 m² in size.

In the “Natural History” section, visitors are taken on a chronological journey through the history of the earth, from the origins of life to man and his environment. In addition to a large collection of fossils, minerals and dinosaur models, special attractions in this subject area are an original skeleton of a juvenile duckbill dinosaur ( Hypacrosaurus stebingeri ), the largest original Mosasaurus skull (155 cm long) that can be seen in a German museum ( Prognathodon curri) and the original skeleton of a woolly mammoth ( Mammuthus primigenius ). The subject area “technology” makes technical-physical phenomena understandable by means of interactive experiments and a collection of historical objects. A special attraction of this thematic section is a lightning demonstration with a functioning Tesla coil , which is presented every hour. The thematic section “Overseas” sees itself as a place for understanding peoples and shows an extensive collection of traditional handicrafts from all continents. A special attraction of this thematic section is a functional and playable gamelan .

history

The creation of the Galileo knowledge world is based on the amalgamation of the following three museums on the Baltic Sea island of Fehmarn: "Experimenta - Technical Museum you can touch", "Planet Earth - Natural History Museum" and "Überseemuseum". All three museums were founded between 2003 and 2009 in a historic harbor building at Burgstaaken harbor on the island of Fehmarn.

The various museums with their collections developed so well that the space required to expand the “Technology” (formerly “Experimenta”) and “Natural History” (formerly “Planet Earth”) museums became essential. In 2013, these areas were relocated to the new building at the entrance to Burg on Fehmarn. The “Übersee” museum kept its location in the historic hall at the harbor in Burgstaaken on Fehmarn. In 2013 all three museums were united under the name “Galileo Wissenswelt” and have been run under the sponsorship of Galileum Fehmarn GmbH ever since. The scientific supervision was carried out for years by Dr. Gerald Kopp, director of the “Gateway to Primeval Times” museum in Bruges , and other external experts. From the beginning of 2016 to the middle of 2017, the scientific management of the Galileo knowledge world was carried out by geologist Dr. Christian Nyhuis.
