Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location ( English : "Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister's Place "), often called FNAF-SL , FNaF-SL or Sister Location , is the official fifth part of the Five Nights at Freddy’s game series . The game was released on October 7, 2016. However, it is not a sequel in the sense of Five Nights at Freddy's 5 (FnaF-5 for short), but a kind of parallel story.

It is the first full installment in the FNaF series in which other people besides Cawthon were involved.

history

prehistory

In one of the teasers that announced the game, a prehistory was also revealed. This is about the pizzeria Circus Baby's Pizza World , which should open some time before the beginning of the plot of Sister Location and contain the animatronics of the game. However, the planned opening of the restaurant was canceled at short notice due to alleged gas leaks after only a few children were able to try out the pizzeria. The building was then sold and all objects moved to another location.

Main story

FNaF Sister Location takes place in an unknown year. The player takes on the role of a nameless night watchman and technician who works in an underground facility called Circus Baby's Entertainment and Rental , which contains the animatronics from the planned Circus Baby's Pizza World . The facility itself also functions as a pizzeria, but its main purpose is to store the animatronics that are rented out during the day for birthday parties and other events.

At the beginning of the game, an excerpt from a conversation between an unknown man and the original inventor and technician of the animatronics, a certain Mr. William Afton , can be heard. The man praises and admires the animatronics and describes them as "technical works of art". But he is surprised about certain elements of the design of the figures that Afton does not explain when asked. It also remains unclear which elements the man noticed.

The animatronics make music, sing and chat during the day on splendidly decorated, liftable and lowerable show stages, each animatronic has its own mini-stage. The figures are not only very flexible, they have Artificial Intelligence (AI), which allows them to interact with the children in a lifelike manner. They answer questions, even accept music requests, read stories to toddlers and inflate balloons. The animatronic "Circus Baby" can even dispense ice cream.

The game character now has the task of taking an elevator to the underground maintenance halls at night and checking the condition of the animatronics and the building, as well as repairing them if necessary. The KI HandUnit is at his side, informing him about his tasks, explaining how they are to be carried out and passing on other news. Between the nights, the protagonist recovers in his house by watching the soap opera The Immortal and the Restless . The next task is first to check that the animatronics are in place. If this is not the case, he must use controlled electric shocks to convince the characters to return to their stages. There is always the danger of being attacked and killed by the animatronics. One of the robots, Circus Baby, keeps in touch with the protagonist over the five nights of the game. She tells him stories about the restaurant and helps him survive the nights. On the third night, the protagonist is even kidnapped by Circus Baby and has to stay in the facility for a full day.

On the second night, Circus Baby tells what really happened before the planned opening of Circus Baby's Pizza World: When there was only one child in Baby's room at one time, she lost control of her body and gave the girl ice cream . When it came up, it was torn by a claw in baby's body and died there. These events preoccupied Circus Baby to this day. The blueprints of the animatronics, which the game happens to show when starting, show that the robots were specially designed by William Afton to lure children to themselves and then to capture them in their bodies. To do this, they have skills such as copying parents' voices and distracting them. Bits of conversation the player hears between nights also suggest that the girl killed was William Afton's daughter, who now owned Baby, which is why the robot's eye color has changed from blue to green.

The player also learns more about the questionable handling of the animatronics by Circus Baby's Entertainment and Rental. In addition to the electric shocks, the endoskeleton is forcibly removed from the shell by animatronics that have not worked properly for a long time with a machine called a scooper , which causes them "a lot of pain". The protagonist sees the scoop of “Ballora” with his own eyes on the fourth night. Each animatronic is subjected to this treatment during the five days of play.

On the fifth night, Baby finally addresses the protagonist with a specific request just before she is supposed to be scooted . It deliberately pretends to be broken so that the protagonist can save all of its good parts and destroy the evil after being treated by the Scooper . The Scooper could not do it alone, but she no longer wants bad things to happen. If the player then follows Baby's instructions, she leads him through the Funtime Auditorium to the room in which the Scooper is located, followed by a whole creature that, according to Baby, is "Ballora" and has to be appeased several times to let the protagonist through . Once at the destination, Baby reveals to the player that she has betrayed him. The animatronics are tired of treatment by the facility and have therefore developed a plan for how they can escape it permanently. This means that the endoskeletons of all animatronics come together after scooping and unite to form a single creature called "Ennard". This could then cover a human body and thus move outside of society. After this explanation, the protagonist is eviscerated by the Scooper and taken over by "Ennard", whereupon the game ends. This ending is called the Real Ending , so it is the one that actually happens in the history of the game series.

However, the player can choose to ignore Baby's instructions in the Funtime Auditorium and take a different route. If he has acquired the key card via the mini-game (see section "Game mechanics"), he can enter the Private Room . There he then has to fend off Ennard for six hours, who tries to approach from all sides. Ennard talks to the protagonist the whole time to get him to give up his resistance, first in Baby's voice, then in that of the girl who killed her. It assures you that the treatment will only hurt for a short time and will not lead to death. If the protagonist survives the night unscathed, this leads to a fake ending . The player is fired for entering the private room without permission, but still receives the bowl of exotic butters that he was promised as an initiation gift for the end of his first week. He can go home and watch the last episode of his soap opera there. Shortly after the episode ends, however, Ennard crawls into the room, who somehow managed to escape without the help of the protagonist.

Custom night

The events of the Custom Night, which was later added to the game via an update, are not real in the plot of the FNaF series, but the cutscenes that are also included are. In the six 8-bit cutscenes you can see Ennard, who carries the body of the protagonist, who lives in the human world. At first the people remove the disguise from him, but with each cut scene the protagonist's body rots more, which scares people more and more. Finally, Ennard decides to leave the body and is spat out into the sewer by Purple Guy, as the protagonist's corpse is also called. The body collapses, but after hearing the words Babies from the private room, "You will not die", he suddenly stands up again with shining white eyes.

In the last cut scene of the game, which is not 8-bit like the others, you can see the burning remains of Fazbear's Fright from FNaF 3 . Against this background, a man speaks with a voice interspersed with mechanical sounds. He identifies himself as Michael and addresses a William whom he calls father. He had done everything that was assigned to him and put "them" back together and freed them, but was confused by "them" with William. Now he is still alive, although he should actually be dead, and lives in the shadows. He closes the speech by promising to find his father. Springtrap rises from the ruins of Fazbear's Fright.

This cutscene confirms that Springtrap survived the fire at the end of FNaF 3. Furthermore, the dialogue strongly suggests that the protagonist of Sister Location is Michael Afton and his father William Afton and that he only accepted the job at Circus Baby's Entertainment and Rental at his father's request. Which of the two sons of Afton Michael shown in FNaF 4 remains unclear. Because of the scene, it is also often speculated that Mike Schmidt from FNaF 1 , Fritz Smith from FNaF 2 and the unnamed protagonist of FNaF 3 are the identities of Michael Afton, who went through the restaurants to clean up his father's deeds.

Characters

protagonist

  • Eggs Benedict is the unofficial name of the protagonist whose role the player takes on. The name, however, is a pseudonym given by the nasty hand-unit speech computer . His appearance, age and real name are withheld from the player, and his motives are also unknown. It could be that the protagonist is called “Mike” because a corresponding name tag was stuck to the voice computer. However, this must remain speculation , as the protagonist is neither addressed personally nor introduces himself to the player. After the events of the game, he becomes a purple-hued revenant who is still alive for reasons unknown. On Custom Night it is finally revealed that the identity of the protagonist is "Michael Afton", the son of William Afton. He accepted the position at Cicus Baby's Entertainment and Rental at a request from his father, presumably to look for his sister, and is now looking for her. These revelations have led to speculation that Afton is also the protagonist of FNaF 1 , 2 and 3 .

Antagonists

  • Purple Guy is a pseudonym used for an antagonist who first appeared in Five Nights at Freddy's 2 . The protagonist of Sister Location appears in the cutscenes of Custom Night as the Purple Guy (English: "Purple Man"). There he is a kind of cyborg : the animatronic Ennard succeeded in grabbing the body of the night watchman, disembowelling and implanting his own endoskeleton in the new body. Disguised as a person, Ennard managed to escape the restaurant. But he did not consider that the human body will soon begin to rot without its original anatomical equipment, which is why it soon leaves the body again. However, for unknown reasons, he lives on without Ennard. It is not clear whether the Purple Guy from the remaining parts of the game is identical to the protagonist of Sister Location .
  • William Afton is the killer of children and the technically gifted inventor and programmer of many animatronics. His appearance and age are withheld from the player. However, it can be heard at the beginning of the game. His daughter fell victim to one of his inventions, Circus Baby .
  • HandUnit is a voice computer with highly developed artificial intelligence. It is intended to help newcomers find their way into night work more easily and to be able to carry out technical maintenance work more easily. While he does indeed give useful instructions and tips, he also has a tendency to joke at the protagonist's expense. He also seems to have been manipulated: his touchscreen is bugged and can no longer be operated.

Animatronics

  • Circus Baby is the eponymous mascot of Circus Baby's Pizza World. At about 2.30  m it is the largest animatronic. Baby has the shape of a chubby girl in a red clown costume , her face is also made up in the clown style. She has green eyes and two pony braids as a hairstyle. Baby hides a mechanical gripping arm in her hollow belly that she used to kill William Afton's daughter, who she is now obsessed with. Baby is accompanied by two small, bald animatronics named Bidybab . Baby does not appear in Custom Night, but a bidybab is present. It moves through the ventilation system and after certain noises must be blocked by closing the door to the shaft.
  • Ballora is an animatronic in the form of a young ballerina . Among other things, she wears a mauve tutu and blue fishnet knee socks. Her hairstyle is tied in a strict topknot ( bun ). Their eyes are always closed and only open during their jump scares . Ballora's body assumes a ballet pose, which is typical for dancers when they do a pirouette . And that's exactly what Ballora does: she circles through her maintenance hangar, always turning pirouettes. At her side are four small figurines (also controlled by animatronics), they are called mini mereenas . Ballora is in the Ballora Gallery: Party Room and Dance Studio ( Ballora Gallery for short ). Ballora also sings in Custom Night. There the player has to pay attention from which direction and how loudly she sings in order to know which door he has to close and when to fend off her jumpscare. The Minireenas attack in Custom Night in two different ways. The minireenas that are activated by the minireena collect randomly in CAM 06 and branch off the player's oxygen there. They must be evicted by a controlled shock. The minireenas that are activated by Minireena 2 gradually appear in front of the player's field of vision until all five are there. Fending them off or driving them away is impossible.
  • Funtime Freddy is an anthropomorphic bear with a small top hat and two black buttons on the chest. He is snow white with a pink muzzle and a pink jacket . He has a pink microphone in his left hand and a ventriloquist dummy named BonBon in his right hand . The doll has the appearance of Toy Bonnie from FNaF 2 or Bonnie from FNaF 1 . BonBon has its own AI and can also operate independently of Funtime Freddy. Funtime Freddy sends out BonBon in the Custom Night to attack the player. You have to listen carefully to which side he is speaking and which words he uses to find out which door has to be closed.
  • Funtime Foxy is an anthropomorphic fox whose gender is unclear. It's also white with a pink lycra suit and appears to be doing acrobatic shows. Funtime Foxy is strongly reminiscent of the character Mangle from FNaF 2 , from whom it also took over the gender insecurity. Funtime Foxy activates itself when it detects movement and is located in the Funtime Auditorium. In Custom Night, Funtime Foxy behaves similarly to Foxy from the first game. It is behind a curtain on CAM 07 where it goes through different phases. If he leaves the room, the right door must be closed to prevent jumpscare.
Special characters
  • Ennard is an animatronic, but has a special role. He seems to have put himself together from various components of the animatronics. Ennard also has a highly developed artificial intelligence. He can not only expand and redesign his body on his own, but also has the various abilities of animatronics, such as B. Imitate voices. He finally uses this ability to lure the technician into a trap, eviscerate with the "scooper" and use the human shell as a masquerade to escape from the bar. Cutscenes of Custom Night show how Ennard fared outside of the facility. According to this, he was able to successfully leave the restaurant and fool the other people for a short time. But at some point the body began to rot. In the last cutscene, the player sees Ennard leaving the protagonist's body by being spat into the sewer by him.
  • Yenndo is a costumeless terminal skeleton with yellow eyes. It looks very similar to the endoskeleton of Funtime Freddy, which, in addition to Yenndo's mysterious nature, has brought about comparisons with the character Golden Freddy from FNaF 1 . In the game, Yenndo can be found on the third night in the Funtime Auditorium. There it can very rarely appear instead of Funtime Foxy when the player presses the light. However, there is no danger from him. On Custom Night, he can appear in the office after the monitor is flipped down, which causes the player's oxygen to drop rapidly. If the oxygen drops to zero before Yenndo can be driven away by opening the monitor again, he carries out a fatal jumpscare .
  • Lolbit is a character who originally comes from the FNaF World and is responsible for selling items there. It looks a lot like Funtime Foxy, but has a purple-orange color scheme. Lolbit only appears as an Easter egg in the main game, when Ennard's mask, which is usually attached to the primary control module , is rarely replaced by a Lolbit mask. In Custom Night, Lolbit blocks the player's screen from time to time and can be driven away by typing "LOL" on the keyboard.
  • Bonnet is a pink hand puppet of an animatronic rabbit, which is strongly reminiscent of BonBon. It only appears on Custom Night and moves across the screen at random times. The player must click her nose to avoid the attack that would otherwise occur when she reached the end of the screen.
  • Electrobab is a character who looks largely identical to Bidybab, the bright yellow eyes are. Like Bonnet, it only appears on Custom Night, where it appears from time to time in one of the two halls and uses the player's electricity there faster. He must be driven away by a controlled shock.

Game mechanics

Gameplay

FnaF-Sister Location belongs to the genre of survival horror. The player should not only be frightened by jump scares, but also challenged and entertained by the targeted and skillful stirring up of fear and paranoia. The object of the game is to survive all five nights. If the player is successful and has survived all five nights, he can enjoy his evening at home after the first two successful night shifts and watch a cartoon series called "The Immortal and the Restless".

control

FnaF-Sister Location can be played on Windows PCs, Linux PCs, Android-enabled devices and / or iOS devices. Control takes place under Windows and Linux by mouse click and keyboard, under Android, Windows Phone and iOS by touchscreen.

Rules of the game

The single player mode is played from the first person perspective. The player is in a more or less run-down control room, from which he controls the action. By crossing a ventilation shaft, he can switch between the main control room and a small second room behind it. Otherwise the view of the player is limited to several large panorama windows and the ventilation shaft, he cannot leave his room.

Each night shift starts at 12:00 midnight and ends at 6:00 a.m. In real time, a night in the Windows and Linux versions lasts about eight to nine minutes, in the Android, Windows Phone and iOS versions it is just under five to six minutes. At the beginning of each night, the player receives instructions from a voice computer with artificial intelligence about how to operate the control rooms and how to switch between them.

As already mentioned, the animatronics are on their show stages during the day to entertain the pizzeria visitors. At night the stages sink into an underground facility to be serviced, cared for and, if necessary, reset. At the beginning of each night shift, the night shift takes an elevator to underground rooms in which the control and maintenance units for the animatronics are hidden.

The main control room ( control room A ) and the first secondary control room ( control room B ) have large, clear panoramic windows through which the player can observe the stage figures. There are switches to the left and right of the large panoramic windows.

Each switch in turn has two buttons. On the top blue button there is a sun-like symbol that activates the headlights behind the panorama windows. This allows the player to see the figures (or their shadows), provided that they are in their usual place. A lightning bolt symbol is emblazoned on the lower orange switch. When this button is pressed, the robots will receive electric shocks, forcing them to return to their stages.

There is, however, a third room ( electronics room ) where the building's power fuses and emergency power switches are located. In order to reach the electronics room, the player has to pass through either “Balloras” or “Funtime Foxys” maintenance room. Crawling on all fours, the player has to be careful that the animatronics don't catch him, which is quite difficult because the rooms are in the dark and the flashlight is only dimly lit.

Since the animatronics repeatedly unscrew the fuses and damage the emergency power generator, the player is forced to enter this narrow space, which makes it an easy and desirable target for the animatronics (especially "Funtime Freddy"). Power and device failures are indicated by a loud alarm, and the complex building plan appears on a small tablet. Rooms in which faults have occurred are highlighted by flashing red warning symbols. Rooms whose technology has been successfully repaired and put into operation are marked by a green flashing and the word "Online".

As mentioned earlier, the animatronics are able to leave their show stages and wander around. If the player in Control Room B is caught by surprise, he can hide under a large desk. The predecessor put a large aluminum plate under the table, this can (and should) be pushed aside so that it covers the player's hiding place. Unfortunately, the record is perforated several times and the animatronics (especially "Bidibab" and "Circus Baby") are agile enough to poke through the holes. If the player shines the animatronic in the eye, this can result in an early jump care. The player has to rely on his good hearing and listen to whether the animatronic has left the room again.

If, on the other hand, the player is surprised in control room A, he can try to escape via the ventilation shaft. However, this is extremely risky, because the animatronics (especially “Bidibab” and “Ennard”) can crawl through the shaft and track the player.

Game ends

Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location offers two alternative game ends: The first, “official” ending deals with the murder of the protagonist by “Ennard” from a first-person perspective. The scenery changes to a slightly shabby bathroom, an anthropomorphic silhouette appears in the mirror . Shortly before the end of the sequence, purple eyes light up on the silhouette's face.

The second, “unofficial” ending (also known as the “fake ending”) is also told from a first-person perspective and shows the protagonist's private living room. He is sitting in front of the television and watching a cartoon series when "Ennard" approaches the viewer from the right.

Reviews

Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location received mostly positive reviews, but not as positive as, for example, Five Nights at Freddy's and Five Nights at Freddy's 4 . The game received 65% on the Gamerankings website and 6/10 on Destructoid.com . The game's gloomy atmosphere and the varied tasks that the player has to solve as a night technician were praised. On the other hand, the imbalance in difficulty levels and jumpscares between the individual nights was criticized. In addition, some black-humorous moments (such as HandUnit's hateful comments) seemed strangely out of place.
