Hair pinned up in a bun

A topknot (regional and Gogsch or Punz , in the Schwalm snitch , Switzerland also Huppi or Püürzi , especially in Austria and dumplings ) or Dutt is one on the crown or on the back of the head, often in front nearby, braided into a bun twisted or coiled hairstyle of the head hair . Meyers Konversationslexikon from 1905 describes the topknot , also ( French ) chignonknown as "the hair that is turned up in a bag-like bulge and fastened to the back of the head with a comb". Hair knots on both sides of the head, which are wound from braids or strands of hair, are called (ear) snails.

The topknot is common as a hairstyle for women, more rarely also for men under the designation “men's bun ”, “men's bun ”, “men's bun ” and man bun .

history

The topknot can be traced back to ancient Greece . Attic women pinned their hair up with handcrafted gold or ivory needles. The hairstyle was also worn by Attic men, but they put their hair together with golden clips. The topknot was typical of Athens . In other city-states such as Sparta and Cyprus , different hairdresses were worn.

In the Roman Republic around the time of Christ's birth, respected women wore their hair rather plain and pinned on the parting. Hair that was dressed up and decorated with various objects was only worn by prostitutes. At different times only virgins wore their hair down, the married women pinned their hair up. The Roman writer Tacitus tells of the warriors of the Germanic tribe of the Suebi who combed their hair sideways and tied it up in a knot on the head, the so-called Suebi knot , in order to appear larger and more impressive in battle.

While in the Middle Ages women mostly wore their hair braided and under a veil , updos came up with the Renaissance . In England, Queen Elizabeth I popularized, among other things, pinned hair. Maria Stuart wore her hair pinned up, coiffed over a heart-shaped wire frame. In the neoclassical style of the Napoleonic and Victorian periods , women wore their hair in a bun, similar to the hairstyles of ancient Greece, with individual curls falling over the forehead or over the ears.

The topknot experienced another heyday in the 1940s when women working in the war industry wore their hair in a bun to protect it during working hours.

The top knot is perceived as typical especially in ballet ( ballerina knots ), but also for women with long hair in the military , where the hair has to stay tidy and long or flying hair could be a problem. The hair is often pinned on to a knot during vaulting , artificial cycling and rhythmic gymnastics . Occasionally, male dancers wear their hair in a bun in ballet. Another discipline in which a topknot is traditionally worn is sumo wrestling ( see Chonmage ).

For the Indian Sikhs , wearing uncut hair is part of their religion. They often wear their hair in a tightly tied bun under a hat.

equipment

The topknot is held together with tools. These include metal hairpins , ornate hair clips , hair nets , hair bands, hair clips and small combs . Hair pads that give the knot shape or volume are also used.

Types and variants

  • A ballerinas knot is a hair knot rolled up from a ponytail at the back of the head. During winding, the ponytail is twisted (twisted). Since the hairstyle is exposed to great stress when dancing, it is worked tight, occasionally with damp hair. Additional stability can be achieved by using a hair net or hair gel.
  • A donut bun is a hair bun that is wrapped around a donut- shaped knot pillow. There are various techniques for using it. Instead of a knotted pillow, the hair can also be wrapped around a rolled-up sock cut off at the tip of the toe. A ballerinas knot that is loosely pinned on offers a similar appearance - without any padding, but less stable.
  • A Gibson tuck (also: Gibson roll ) is created when you tie the downward hanging hair with a rubber band just above the tips and then roll it up in an outward twist. The finished roll is pinned with bobby pins. The elegant hairstyle, named after an American fashion ideal of that time, was fashionable at the turn of the 20th century and is worn again today.
  • A banana or hair banana ( French twist , French chignon banana ) is a vertically rolled Gibson tuck.
  • Odango ( お 団 子 ) in Japanese refers to a round topknot because it looks like a dango , a Japanese dumpling. Sometimes it is also used to describe the snail hairstyle outside of Japan. A small snail is rolled at the top left and top right of the head with the roots of the braids. If the braids have not been completely wound, after the snails have been attached, the ends of the braids can be left hanging freely, creating a combination of both hairstyles.

After antiquity, men usually wore long hair loose or in a braid. In the 21st century, the topknot came back into fashion with athletes like David Beckham , Oleksandr Dolhopolow and Xavier Malisse . The actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Leonardo DiCaprio as well as the singer Harry Styles took over the hairstyle. In 2012, young men in New York 's Williamsburg and Bushwick neighborhoods twisted their hair into a bun. In 2013 the trend reached the European metropolises. The knot sits on the back of the head and is often combined with a full beard .

Male Sikh bind her hair under the Dastar or Rumal to Joora - or Rishi node. The sumo wrestlers wear the topknot-like chonmage of the samurai .
