Five Nights at Freddy's (German about: Five Nights at Freddy's , often with FNAF or FNaF abbreviated) is a point-and-click - computer game series from the topic of survival horror . It is based on an idea by the independent game developer Scott Cawthon , who programs the games himself and has published them on the Internet distribution platforms Desura and Steam since August 8, 2014. The game series was released for devices with Windows , iOS , Android and Windows Phone and is also available on Nintendo Switch , Xbox One and PlayStation 4 .

action

The Five Nights at Freddy’s series offers a complex and multi-layered background story that only gradually clears up with the individual episodes. When playing the individual parts, the chronological order is not always very clear, which among other things contributes to many different interpretations of the plot. In addition, very few parts of the plot are directly explained to the player, most of which has to be explored. In the following, the background story is given in the correct chronological order.

In the early 1980s, the genius but sadistically inclined inventor William Afton founded Fazbear Entertainment . Together with his then business partner Henry Emily (whose full name is only mentioned in the book series) he created the first, ultra-modern animatronics in his private factory, Afton Robotics . The animatronics were rented to private franchise pizzerias, where they were supposed to sing and make music for the visitors (mainly children). The figures were extremely agile and could even walk through the bars. Afton refined her technique so that later slender actors could slip into the characters and interact with the visitors like mascots . He also built futuristic facial recognition software into their servers so that the animatronics could identify potential criminals and report them immediately via police radio.

But the first incidents soon occurred: performers in special costumes were seriously injured several times. Several children disappeared in the bars that the animatronics had rented. The visitors soon noticed that some of the dolls were oozing blood and body tissue and that they gave off a terrible stench. Finally, the health department intervened, threatening the local owners with closing the operations if the situation did not improve soon. In addition, the animatronics began to stare and even threaten adult visitors.

Some time later, Emily's daughter Charlotte was locked out during a birthday party in front of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza and killed by a stranger in a purple uniform. Her mind then drove into the character The Puppet . After that, paranormal incidents increased in the bars and several night guards disappeared. Afton's daughter Elizabeth died a short time later : although William had expressly forbidden his daughter to do so, Elizabeth had come too close to the Animatronic Circus Baby . Circus Baby killed the child using a strong, mechanical gripper arm. Her mind first took possession of Baby and eventually took control of the entire Afton Robotics factory to build her own animatronic ("Ennard").

In the meantime, Afton himself was killed by a special costume. He had tried to destroy all the animatronics in the place. In doing so, however, he released the angry spirits of the children who had been killed so far. They pushed him into a secret room where he had kept the special Springbonnie costume for years. When trying to hide in the costume, the pop-up mechanism failed and crushed Afton. His own mind then drove into the costume that he now called Springtrap . When the animatronic found and the ghost train The Horror Attraction - Fred Bear's Fright used Afton was brought, a serious fire to escape.

In the sixth game part, Five Nights at Freddy's - Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator , the (nameless) protagonist reveals a shocking secret about the animatronics: William Afton had apparently created all of his characters only to kill children and hide their corpses in them. When Emily found out, Afton manipulated the special costume "Fredbear" (the previous model of "Freddy") and Emily was killed in it. What Afton hadn't considered, however, was that the ghosts of the children would run into the characters. The protagonist (in or, respectively, the player) now founds his own bar with labyrinth-like corridors, into which he lures "Circus Baby", "Springtrap" and "Ennard", destroys it by means of a targeted fire and frees the last trapped souls. The protagonist is killed.

In Five Nights at Freddy's VR: Help Wanted , the timing of which in the plot is controversial, Fazbear Entertainment tries to restore its good reputation. It processes the previous events into a virtual reality game called The Freddy Fazbear Virtual Experience in order to ridicule them. However, other exceptional incidents occur during the development of the game.

Game mechanics

control

Five Nights at Freddy’s can be played on Windows PCs, Android-enabled devices, iOS devices, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The control takes place under Windows by mouse click and keyboard, under Android, iOS and Windows Phone by touch screen and on the consoles with the respective buttons or keys.

General

Five Nights at Freddy’s belongs to the genre of survival horror . The player should not only be frightened by jump scares , but also challenged and entertained by the targeted and skillful stirring up of fear and paranoia . The aim of the game is initially to survive all five main nights. If the player is successful and has survived all five nights, he will receive a pay check in the first two games - but with the request to appear again next week. Then be actionable in the following four games cutscenes shown.

The single player mode is played from the first person perspective . The player is at a central location in the building, from which he controls the action. In the first three parts and Pizzeria Simulator this is an office, and in Five Nights at Freddy's 4 it is a bedroom. Sister Location is the only exception, here the player can move relatively freely through the building. The first three parts also provide the player with a monitor that is connected to surveillance cameras throughout the facility. So the animatronics can be observed. Otherwise, the player's view of the office and its immediate surroundings is limited and he cannot leave his premises.

Each night shift starts at 12:00 midnight and ends at 6:00 a.m. The length of these "nights" in real time varies between the different games, but on average it decreases over the course of the series. In the first game, a night lasts 8 minutes and 40 seconds in the PC version; a single hour lasts around 95 seconds. However, this does not apply to the Android, Windows Phone and iOS versions. There it is only 5 minutes and 45 seconds per night. In Five Nights at Freddy's 3, a night lasts 5 minutes and 48 seconds. In the Ultimate Custom Night offshoot , it's only 4 minutes and 30 seconds.

The aim of the player is to get through the night unscathed. For this purpose, the animatronics must be prevented from reaching the player with the aid of the mechanisms provided by the respective game. These mechanisms are in Five Nights at Freddy’s doors, hall lights and the monitor, in Five Nights at Freddy's 2 a flashlight, the monitor, a jukebox, a Freddy Fazbear mask and doors, in Five Nights at Freddy's 3 the monitor and an option for audios drop off, and in Five Nights at Freddy's 4 doors and a flashlight. Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location lets the player encounter several animatronics in the course of the plot, each of which has to be fended off in completely different ways. In Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator , the player again has an audio system, a motion detector, silent ventilation, the ability to look around and the ability to switch off his ventilation and his computer. Ultimate Custom Night has a particularly large number of different defense options, including most of the previous games, but many of which only target one or a small group of animatronics. With the exception of Pizzeria Simulator , every animatronic has its own movement pattern and different necessary defensive measures in all parts.

However, the player is also put under pressure by some mechanisms. In Five Nights at Freddy's and Ultimate Custom Night the building can run out of power, causing the other functions to fail, in Five Nights at Freddy's 2 the flashlight can run out of battery, in Five Nights at Freddy's 3 the systems can fail and then have to be restarted , including a ventilation system, which returns in a similar way in Pizzeria Simulator and Ultimate Custom Night .

If one of the animatronics succeeds in getting to the player, he usually carries out a jumpscare in which he attacks him. This results in a game-over screen, with some special animatronics the game crashes or restarts instead. The opponents with this behavior usually belong to what fans call " hallucinations ". These consist of various, sometimes very rare, spooky phenomena , such as the sudden appearance of pictures on the computer screen or the change in posters hanging on the wall for no apparent reason, which mainly occur in the first three parts. However, most of these phenomena have no direct impact on the player. However, they are often important pointers to better understand the plot of the series. In particular, Golden Freddy , arguably the most famous hallucination, is a very important character in the series.

In each part of the series there is a kind of bonus level , mostly in the form of additional nights, which can be played to gain new knowledge about the plot and for playful challenges. In the first two games there is a sixth and seventh night, the sixth being significantly more difficult than the previous nights and the seventh a so-called "Custom Night", in which the level of difficulty of each animatronics can be set individually. The "Custom Night" is so popular that a night sister location designed in this way was added as DLC and the concept in Ultimate Custom Night was expanded into an independent game with over 50 animatronics. The third part only contains a more difficult sixth night, while the fourth has a sixth, seventh and eighth night, each of which becomes more and more difficult. The fifth game has a secret ending that can be reached on the fifth night, as well as the "Custom Night" that was added later, and the sixth has several secret endings that can be reached in different ways.

No Five-Nights-at-Freddy’s part actually only has five nights.

Criticism and Reviews

  • Five Nights at Freddy’s : Even the first part of the game receivedmostly positive reviewsfrom professional gamers and game critics such as Joel Couture and Omri Petitte . On Metacritic , a media reviews website, the game achieved a rating of 78%, and on GameRankings , another aggregator service, it achieved an average rating of 85%. Game critic Justin Clark rated the game“great!”For the online magazine GameSpot and awarded it 8 out of 10 possible points. On the website PC Gamer awarded Five Nights at Freddy's vote of 80%. The online portal Pocketgamer , whichspecializesin mobile games ,gave the Android version of Five Nights at Freddy’s a Gold Award and awarded 9 out of 10 possible points. Play tester Patrick Slater described it as "a clever scare party that balances jump scares with ankle-biting tension".
  • Five Nights at Freddy's 2 : FNaF 2 also received mostly positive reviews. The gamereviewplatform Gamerankings.com awarded 66.25% of a possible 100%, based on four independent reviews so far. For the iOS version, Gamerankings.com has so far awarded 75% of a possible 100%, based on two independent reviews so far. Game critic Nick Rowen particularly praised the feeling of being "helplessly at the mercy of an oppressive cat-and-mouse game" when playing through. He also positively emphasized that it was fun to watch other players when they “screech like little girls at every jump scare”. Rowen awarded the game 7 out of 10 points.
  • Five Nights at Freddy's 3 was rated poorly. The gamer portal Game Rankings gave the game a rating of 73.60%. In a review on PC Gamer , the game received 77 points.
  • Five Nights at Freddy's 4 received average reviews overall. The game website Gamerankings.com gave the game 70%. Other websites, such as TouchArcade (3 out of 5 stars), 148Apps (3.5 out of 5 stars) and Gamezebo (4 out of 5 stars) also rate FNaF-4 positively. Game critics, such as Nick Rowen , were less gracious and criticized above all that FNaF-4 is unimaginative and uncreative. In addition, game mechanics and character design are based too much on the first game part, which makes FNaF-4 disappointingly predictable. Last but not least, Rowen complained that even FNaF-4 - story-wise - was not able to clear up well-known puzzles and theories about the background story of the Five Nights at Freddy’s saga and instead only created more rumors.
  • Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location : FNaF: SL received mostly positive reviews, but not as positive as, for example, Five Nights at Freddy's and Five Nights at Freddy's 4 . Thegame received 65%on the Gamerankings website and6/10on Destructoid.com . The game's gloomy atmosphere and the varied tasks that the player has to solve as a night technician were praised. On the other hand, the imbalance in difficulty levels and jumpscares between the individual nights was criticized. In addition, some black-humorous moments (such as HandUnit's hateful comments) seemed strangely out of place.
  • Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator : FFPS was mostly positively received. The free nature of the game was positively highlighted. On the other hand, it was criticized that the economic simulation and survival horror parts of the game did not fit together thematically. On Metacritic , the game has a rating of 7.5 out of 10 based on user reviews.
  • Five Nights at Freddy's VR: Help Wanted : The ratings for Help Wanted are largely positive. The high horror factor of the game, as well as the variety of gameplay are particularly emphasized. It is often referred to as "the best part of the series so far". On the other hand, the control, which is imprecise and hesitant in places, is criticized. The rating based on Metacritic is 80/100.

Commercial win

According to current statistical lists of portals selling games such as Steam and Twitch , Five Nights at Freddy’s was downloaded up to 4,694 times a day via iPhone and PC up to June 2015, which results in an approximate daily income of $ 12,880.00 (corresponds to around € 11,560.00). Scott Cawthon has since donated a total of $ 256,500.00 to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (a highly cited children 's hospital in Memphis , Tennessee that specifically treats children with cancer and leukemia ). If the Five Nights at Freddy’s series hadn’t been such a surprise success, Scott Cawthon would have had to give up his professional career as a game designer.

Adaptations and parodies

Similar to the fictional character “ Slender Man ”, all parts of the Five Nights at Freddy’s series have now found their way into the popular indie open world game “ Minecraft ”. There, players can choose to explore a three-dimensional replica of "Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria" in single or multiplayer mode, while avoiding the animatronics. A similar game offshoot is Five Nights at Freddy's - Gmod . The so-called " Garry's Mod " (the full name) is a game server that converts various games into 3D animations and offers single-player and multi-player modes. The player can now play Five Nights at Freddy’s in three dimensions. Just like in the original game, the adventurers have to escape the animatronics, but they can also "fight" each other. There are also humorous versions of the first three parts as an RPG horror game under the name Five Nights at Fuckboy’s .

Fandom

Fan disguised as in-game character "Foxy" ( Cosplay ).

The Five Nights at Freddy’s game series is particularly popular in the USA. Game critics such as Rob Gordon describe it as a "big surprise hit among video games in recent years". The unexpected popularity of the game is primarily based on an almost explosively growing fan base . Game fans of all ages and social classes have now founded Internet forums worldwide and / or meet on public discussion forums to exchange ideas or to express their enthusiasm. This is expressed, among other things, in fanart , while others express their enthusiasm through so-called cosplay , in which they dress up as one of the animatronics. The phenomenon has been (and is) criticized especially in US society. The main focus of the reviews is that part of the fan base whose members react extremely aggressively and immaturely to any kind of criticism against the game series or against its creator, Scott Cawthon.

So-called Let's Play videos for all Five Nights at Freddy’s parts are becoming a real hype on the YouTube video portal . Some Let's Play videos recorded more than a million views within a month, while the highest number of views of some videos is currently over 17 million clicks. Game critics, such as Nick Rowen , suspect one possible reason for the hype is a certain attraction to watching professional Youtubers frighten themselves while they are playing. The motive in this case would be malicious joy . For many viewers, however, it is also as if they were watching a horror film and literally shared the excitement: viewers who have already played the game themselves would love to call out warnings to the Youtuber in order to save him a jump care or a game over (like the video comments suggest). The high number and skillful use of jumpscares in Five Nights at Freddy’s do the rest.

The surprising and overwhelming success of the Five Nights at Freddy’s series is also reflected in numerous game derivatives created by fans. The best known is Five Nights at Candy’s , which is very much based on the original series. Also known are Those Nights at Rachel’s , The Joy of Creation and One Night at Flumpty's , among others .

Merchandising

The success of the series has led to flourishing merchandising . Toy manufacturers such as Funko and McFarlane Toys sell plush and action figures , key rings and even board games and cereals around the world .

Implementations in other media

Scott Cawthon has since published three novels that are inspired by the game series . According to their own statement, however, they are not part of the actual game canon. The first work was released on December 17, 2015 under the title Five Nights at Freddy's: Die silbernen Augen (Original: Five Nights at Freddy's: The Silver Eyes ), the second part was released on June 27, 2017 and is entitled Five Nights at Freddy's : Crazy (Original: Five Nights at Freddy's: The Twisted Ones ). On June 26, 2018, the last part of the trilogy, Five Nights at Freddy's: The fourth closet (Original: Five Nights at Freddy's: The Fourth Closet ) was released.

In addition, two more books about the game series have been published: Five Nights at Freddy's: The Freddy Files was published on August 29, 2017, it is a solution book for the first five parts of the video game series. Five Nights at Freddy's: Survival Logbook was published on December 26th, 2017, it is structured as a children's book, but contains many hidden clues about the plot of the games. Five Nights at Freddy's: The Freddy Files was released on June 25, 2019 with additional information about the rest of the series. A series of five books, each telling three short stories set in the FNaF universe , has been published since December 2019. It is called Fazbear's Frights , but was first announced as Twisted Tales . The first book in the series, Into The Pit , was released on December 26, 2019, and the second, Fetch , is slated for March 3, 2020. The third book is called 1:35 AM and is scheduled for May 5th, 2020, and the fourth book, Step Closer , is scheduled for July 7th, 2020.

On December 26, 2019, Five Nights at Freddy's: The Silver Eyes was published as a graphic novel .

In addition, a film version of the first part of the series is planned, as was announced in April 2015. The script for this has been rewritten by game designer Scott Cawthon since November 2018. In the event that the film is successful, two sequels are planned.
