Max Oechslin

Max Oechslin (born May 28, 1893 in Zurich ; † September 8, 1979 in Altdorf UR ) was a Swiss forest engineer .

He gained notoriety through his function as head of the cantonal forest and culture office of the canton of Uri . He has also published a large number of publications on alpinism , avalanche research and nature and homeland protection . 1935 awarded him the University of Basel , the honorary doctorate .

Life

Max Oechslin was the son of the electrical engineer Carl Wilhelm Oechslin and the French Marie born. Buissière. After attending primary and secondary school in Oerlikon, he switched to the Zurich industrial school. He completed his forest engineering studies at the ETH Zurich . In 1919 he moved to Altdorf, where he was the cantonal forester from 1930 to 1960. In 1920 he married Frieda Huber, who came from a merchant family in Winterthur . The marriage had three children: the pharmacist Margrit Widmer, the forester Karl Oechslin and the architect Heidi Gygax.

In his role as chief forester in the canton, Max Oechslin made outstanding efforts to preserve the protective forest. He made pioneering contributions to snow and avalanche research. He established a modern approach to natural hazards in the canton and pushed the construction of protective structures. He was also one of the founders of the Uri Farmers' School in 1938, where he taught until 1952. At the national level he advocated nature and homeland protection. He campaigned for the creation of a bird sanctuary in the Uri Reuss delta. From 1941, Max Oechslin was editor of the SAC association magazine "Die Alpen" for 25 years . From 1926 to 1958 he was a member of the Swiss Glacier Commission. Under the pseudonym Max Eugen Bergmann he published poems, the novella "Die Schuld" and for 30 years articles in the Urner Wochenblatt .
