Galisteo Basin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Galisteo Basin is a region in north-central New Mexico , about 15 miles south of Santa Fe . The basin is fed by Galisteo Creek. To the northeast of Galisteo Basin is the Sangre de Cristo Range , and to the southwest are the Sandia Mountains . Due to its location as a connection between the Great Plains and the Rio Grande Valley, a trade route for the prehistoric and historical indigenous peoples and later also the Spanish conquerors passed through the Galisteo Basin.

The Galisteo Basin has a rich cultural history as part of the Pueblo (Eastern Anasazi ) culture. Most of the sites are currently closed to the public. The most famous pueblo ruin within the basin is the San Cristobal Pueblo.
