The Galleria d'Arte Moderna ( G / M ) is a municipal art museum in Palermo .

history

The main initiator for founding this museum was the Palermitan lawyer and politician Empedocle Restivo (1876–1938). Planning began in 1906, and the opening took place in 1910. In honor of its main initiator, it was named Galleria d'Arte moderna "Empedocle Restivo".

Until 2005, the museum was housed in the too narrow rooms on the mezzanine floor of the Teatro Politeama , which were only viewed as a temporary solution when it opened. The insufficient volume of space forced the museum to store most of the objects in its possession in magazines.

Since December 2006 the museum has been located in the Complesso Monumentale di Sant'Anna alla Misericordia , a former Franciscan convent. 176 paintings and 38 sculptures are now on display there. The official name is Galleria d'Arte Moderna, the name of the main initiator has been omitted. Unofficially, the museum is also called Galleria d'Arte Moderna "Sant'Anna" .

Collections

A. Leto: Le Saline di Trapani

The collections consist partly of purchases made during the Esposizione Nazionale in Palermo from 1891 to 1892 and at the Venice Biennials in 1910 and 1911. The most recent acquisitions date from 1932. The Sicilian landscape painters of Ottocento are well represented, including Saline di Trapani by Antonino Leto (1880) and Sicilian sculptors such as Mario Rutelli and Antonio Ugo . Renato Guttuso deserves mention among the painters of the 20th century , especially his self-portrait. Franz von Stuck should be mentioned among the non-Italian artists .
