Antonino Leto (born June 14, 1844 in Monreale , Kingdom of the Two Sicilies ; died May 31, 1913 in Capri ) was an Italian painter.

Life

Antonino Leto was a son of Pietro Leto and Caterina Puleo. He broke off his studies of ancient languages ​​in 1861 and, supported by a scholarship from his hometown, studied painting in Palermo with Luigi Barba and Luigi Lojacono, where he got to know the painting style of the brothers Palizzi and Francesco Lojacono . From 1864 he studied in Naples and received lessons from Adriano Cecioni . He was interested in Giuseppe De Nittis ' painting and the Scuola di Resìna . In 1870 he made his first purchases in Sicily and received his first awards.

In 1873 he became friends with Francesco Paolo Michetti . In 1875 he received a four-year scholarship from the Roman Academy and stayed in Rome and Naples. In 1879 he went to Paris for a year and studied the painting of French Impressionism.

In 1880 he painted a room in the villa of Senator Ignazio Florio in Palermo and frescoes in his villa ai Colli. He had been working on Capri since 1882, but continued to take part in national and international exhibitions, including an exhibition in the Glaspalast in Munich in 1894, the Paris World Exhibition in 1889 and the Venice Biennale in 1910.

The Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Palermo taught after moving 2006 a hall of her collection to Leto and led on 13 October 2018 through 10 February 2019 exhibition entitled Tra l'epopea dei Florio e la luce di Capri by .
