Life and works

Francesco Paolo Michetti was born in the municipality of Tocco da Casauria in 1851. His parents were the music teacher Crispino Michetti and his wife, the organist Aurelia Terzini. The artistically gifted son received a scholarship from the province of Chieti in 1867 , which enabled him to study at the Accademia di belle arti di Napoli (art academy) in Naples under Domenico Morelli . Michetti was influenced and promoted at that time by Filippo Palizzi, Giuseppe De Nittis and Marco De Gregorio, all members of the Scuola di Resìna , an anti-academic group of artists of the 19th century. His favorite subjects were the unspoiled Abruzzo landscapes and religious themes.

Michetti exhibited abroad for the first time in 1872, in France at the Salon de Paris art exhibition . Three years later, De Nittis helped him to have a second exhibition in Paris . In 1872 Michetti exhibited the paintings La raccolta delle zucche and Il Sonno dell'innocenza ; The works presented in 1875 included Ritorno all'erbaggio , Il Sonno dell'Innocenza and La raccolta delle olive . In 1875 and 1876 he took part in other exhibitions. In 1874 he befriended the Spanish painter Marià Fortuny in Naples , who from then on exerted a great influence on his work.

In 1877, on the occasion of the national art exhibition in Naples, Michetti presented his painting La processione del Corpus Domini , a colorful representation of a Corpus Christi procession . In 1880 he exhibited the paintings I Morticelli , Impressioni sull'Adriatico and La pesca delle telline in Turin ; a year later Michetti exhibited 34 paintings in Milan , mostly portraits, landscapes and seascapes .

  1. October 4th, as stated in the Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani, is a misunderstanding: the birth was actually entered in the birth register of Tocco Casauria on October 4th based on the declaration of the midwife, but the birth took place on October 2nd. October 4th was the day of baptism, as can be seen from the extract from the birth register in the Fascicolo personalale of the Senate archive : pp. 10–12.
