Gallery of Modern Art

The Gallery of Modern Art is an art museum in the Scottish city ​​of Glasgow . In 1966 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The building was built in 1778 as the town seat of the tobacco dealer Cunningham . Between 1827 and 1830, the building was redesigned and expanded to accommodate the Royal Exchange , based on a design by David Hamilton . Between 1882 and 1888 and again in 1896 the building was redesigned by David Thomson . Various renovations were carried out between 1900 and 1915. Extensions proposed in 1911 and 1930 were not carried out. In 1940 a final extension was made based on a design by Alexander Nisbet Paterson .

From 1954 the building housed the Stirling's Library . To set up the museum, the library was temporarily moved to a building on Miller Street and has been part of the Gallery of Modern Art since 2002.

The museum is located in the middle of the Royal Exchange Square in central Glasgow. A striking portico with eight colossal Corinthian columns and triangular pediments emerges on the east-facing main facade along Queen Street . A high triple window is built into a segment arched opening on the west facade . Its window posts are made of Corinthian half-columns; Corinthian pilasters flank it. As on the east facade, the wide cornice is designed with a tooth cut .

A Corinthian pilastrade divides the side facade of the older, eastern part of the building. It is five axes wide. The newer part of the building, which is nine axes wide, is designed with six Corinthian columns. A Corinthian lantern with tower clocks and a flat, curved dome sits on top of the building .
