Galloway House , also Garlieston House , is a mansion near the Scottish town of Garlieston in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1972 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. Furthermore, together with various external buildings, it forms a category B monument ensemble. The property is most recently listed in the Scottish register for landscaped gardens.

history

Alexander Stewart, 6th Earl of Galloway , had Galloway House built in the early 1740s. The earliest design was provided by the Scottish architect William Adam , but it was revised by John Douglas . While Stewart was still alive, his son John Stewart , who later became the seventh Earl of Galloway , had the building overhauled in 1764 and began to lay out the gardens and parks. In 1841, Randolph Stewart, 9th Earl of Galloway commissioned the well-known architect William Burn to redesign the mansion. The gardens were redesigned around 1850.

Randolph Henry Stewart, 11th Earl of Galloway, lived beyond his means and in 1907 was forced to sell the property. The McEacharn family bought it and they hired Robert Lorimer to modernize Galloway House. After another change of ownership in 1930 and testing of the Mulberry Ports in nearby Rigg Bay in the early 1940s, the Glasgow Corporation Education Department leased Galloway House between 1947 and 1953. That year the Glasgow Corporation acquired the building and operated up to its closure for economic reasons in 1976 an educational institution.
