The Gallup Refinery (English Gallup Refinery) is an American refinery in Gallup , New Mexico . It belongs to the Marathon Petroleum group . Due to the effects on the oil market caused by the Corona crisis , Marathon Petroleum announced the closure in summer 2020.

history

The Gallup refinery is right off Interstate 40 , which was previously Route 66 here . The refinery is connected to the rail network by the BNSF Railway .

The plants were opened in 1957 by the El Paso Natural Gas Company and sold to Shell in 1964 . In 1982 the Shell refinery was sold to Giant Industries . The acquisition of Giant Industries by Western Refining made it the new parent company. In 2017, Western Refining was taken over by Andeavor. In October 2018, the parent company Andeavor was bought by Marathon Petroleum .

In April 2020, Marathon Petroleum announced that the refinery was temporarily ceasing production due to the coronavirus pandemic . At the beginning of August 2020, the parent company announced that the Gallup refinery and the Martinez refinery in California will be shut down.

Technical specifications

The refinery primarily processes the nearby Four Corners Sweet crude oil . The Four Corner Sweet is a light and sweet type of crude oil . Propane, gasoline , distillates, heavy heating oil and feedstock are produced from this high-quality crude oil .
