Andeavor , formerly Tesoro , was a US oil refining and marketing company. The company was headquartered in San Antonio , Texas . Andeavor was founded in 1964 under the name Tesoro and initially engaged in the exploration and production of petroleum, but in the 1990s it shifted its activities to refining and marketing. The company's first refinery was opened in Kenai in 1969 , and several refineries across the United States were acquired in the following decades. In 2017, the Texas refinery operator Western Refining was taken over, after which it was decided to change the name from Tesero to Andeavor. In October 2018, Andeavor itself was bought by Marathon Petroleum for $ 23 billion .
Explosion accident in Anacortes in 2010
In 2010, seven workers were fatally injured in an accident on the site of a Tesoros refinery in Anacortes . The explosion of a heat exchanger used to preheat naphtha killed three employees immediately, four other people suffered severe burns and succumbed to their injuries within several days. This accident represented one of the largest industrial accidents in Washington State. According to the CSB's accident investigations , the shell of the high-pressure heat exchanger was weakened by a so-called high - temperature hydrogen attack. Depending on the pressure and the temperature, a reaction between hydrogen and the carbon in the steel can occur, whereby methane is deposited between the grain boundaries of the steel. This leads to the formation of microcracks, which can lead to material failure.
